Celebrate Arbor Day in South Miami!

Join our neighbors and our hard-working Park Rangers for a “Think Globally, Act Locally” community tree-planting ceremony.

Where: Van Smith Park 7800 SW 59th Ave
When: April 26th, 2024 | 10am-12pm

The South Miami Garden Club is proud to present this tree-planting ceremony. Started in 2019, this annual event is free and open to the public. All you need to do is show up and be ready to get dirty while nurturing the planet! Gloves, shovels, snacks, and refreshments will be provided.

Van Smith Park is a 1-acre green space with lovely natural walking trails and open lawns perfect for family picnics.

Hope you can make it!

— Thomas Fuller

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be cancelled, but the Parks Department will ensure all trees are properly planted.

Did You Know?

The first Arbor Day was celebrated in Nebraska City on April 10th, 1872. As pioneers began to settle the Nebraska Territory, the profound lack of trees meant they would face challenges in farming, building, and cultivating fuel. J. Sterling Morton, a newspaper journalist and Secretary of the Nebraska Territory, proposed a tree-planting day to be called Arbor Day. Prizes were offered to individuals and counties planting the most trees (properly), and it is estimated that 1 million trees were planted on that day. Since 1972, more than 500 million Arbor Day trees have been planted. What an amazing legacy!
