The village has an area encompassing 7.45 square miles, a population estimated at around 19,000 (2016), 80% of which is college educated, with an average household income in the 6 figures.

But Pinecrest’s history did not have such lofty beginnings.

In the 1900’s, when railroad tycoon Henry Flagler was building the Overseas Railroad to the Florida Keys, an area of the village was used as a staging area during the construction. The community began to grow in the 1930’s when Parrot Jungle was founded, making it one of the first tourist attractions in Miami at the time. A 20 acre site where birds would fly free, Parrot Jungle was built as a winding nature trail with all the natural plants and trees left undisturbed. For 66 years it was a popular, world-famous attraction until 2002 when the Pinecrest Village Council purchased the site and developed it as Pinecrest Gardens. Today the park is home to 1000 varieties of exotic tropical plants, natural streams, sinkholes, caves and fissures.

Throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s the area began to develop ranch style houses on acre lots, which laid the foundation for the lushly landscaped lots that add to Pinecrest’s appeal. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew devastated the area and many of the properties were destroyed. The years that followed brought many changes to the area and many of those early ranch-style homes transformed themselves into million dollar mansions and estates that continue to be built today.

The rapid growth of the community in the 1990s, spurred on the move to incorporate Pinecrest , and in March of 1996 the Village of Pinecrest was officially born. Today, besides Pinecrest Gardens, the Village has five parks that serve the residents’ needs for recreation, offering tennis courts, playgrounds, multi-purpose athletic fields, gazebos with Wi-fi, baseball, basketball, and football fields, and a freshwater lake to name a few. This family friendly, suburban paradise with vast grounds and elegant, spacious homes is one of the most sought after areas to live in.
